Qualifications
  McNair scholars are promising students who come from at least ONE of the populations listed below that are underrepresented in graduate school:
  bullet Low-income AND first-generation college student (i.e. neither parent has attained a bachelor's degree).  
  bullet African American
bullet American Indian
bullet Hispanic
  bullet   Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
  Students must also:
bullet Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
bullet Be an undergraduate college junior or senior enrolled in a Colorado institution
bullet Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
    The minimum GPA may be waived under special circumstances, and when an applicant provides evidence that success is likely.
bullet

Be majoring in one of the following areas of study:

     Agricultural Sciences

     Engineering

     Natural Sciences

     Veterinary Medicine

     Biomedical Sciences

     Experimental Psychology

 
 
 
Advantages

  bullet Information on graduate programs, financial aid, graduate entrance exams, and information on paid internships around the nation.
bullet Three credit seminar "Building a Foundation for Graduate School"

bullet Funds for faculty-mentored research projects.
bullet GRE preparation workshop, tutoring, and the personal assistance.
bullet Summer research internships: $3,200 stipend, plus room & board, and 3 paid credits.
bullet Opportunity to attend national conferences, all expenses paid.
bullet Once enrolled at graduate school at CSU, have the opportunity to apply for the McNair Graduate Fellowship.
Requirements and Time Commitment

Summer program dates: May 27 - July 29, 2008

Consult with McNair staff about goals and progress for graduate school.

bullet Attend the 3-credit seminar course.
bullet Attend and present at the annual Rocky Mountain McNair conference.
bullet Attend McNair GRE preparation workshop.
bullet Complete a 9 week faculty-mentored research project, including a final written report and presentation.
bullet Participate in program activities per contract agreement.
bullet Upon completion of the McNair program students are required to apply to 3 graduate schools.
bullet Complete McNair evaluation assessments to monitor individual program success.
   
Application Information
Click here to obtain an official application.. The application also contains requests for recommendations. Distribute letters of recommendation first then complete the application and return it to the McNair office by the appointed deadline of April 28, 2008, or Until All Positions Are Filled.
    Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Programs are one of the educational opportunity programs funded under the Higher Education Act of 1965 collectively known as TRiO Programs. They focus on students from families whose incomes fall below 150% of the poverty level where neither parent graduated from college. The McNair Scholars Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Colorado State University.
