Poster Presentation

Previous research indicated that spirochetes, in their transit through tick salivary glands, may interact with specific salivary gland proteins to enhance their dissemination to specific target organs of the mammalian host. This study will attempt to isolate specific molecular weight fractions of tick salivary gland proteins responsible for this transmission phenomenon. To examine this phenomenon, Lyme disease susceptible C3H/HeN mice were inoculated with 106 spirochetes of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (ss) strain N40 either alone, or co-inoculated with salivary gland lysate fractions prepared from Ixodes scapularis ticks, the principal vector of Lyme borreliosis. Spirochetes were quantified in organs using quantitative Taqman PCR to amplify the bacterial Flagellin gene. Results were analyzed in terms of the number of spirochetes found in tissue relative to control mice inoculated without SGL (% control).
